Random Musings on Blogoversaries, Nora Roberts and ‘Agricola’

by Sarah on April 13, 2010 · 17 comments

It was my first blogoversary on Saturday and I forgot all about it! My first year of blogging has been great fun for the most part and I can see myself continuing for at least another year or so.

One advantage to blogging has been discovering so many fabulous new-to-me blogs and getting excellent book recommendations. My TBR pile has never been higher, and the quality of the books I read has never been better. As I don’t have access to a library with a large collection of books in English, I buy almost all the books I read, which makes me particularly fussy about the ones I choose. Therefore, I’m very grateful to the readers who take the time to write reviews, and to all the others who chime in on comment threads.

One disadvantage to blogging has been negative interaction with a couple of my fellow bloggers, one of whom I had previously had a lot of respect for. I guess the blogosphere is a microcosm of real life. I don’t like everyone and not everyone is going to like me. C’est la vie. Plus I’ve reached the conclusion that the vast majority of the online kerfuffles are a load of crap, and I couldn’t be arsed involving myself in most of them.

When I started Monkey Bear Reviews, I initially concentrated on romance novels and the romance reading experience. I’ve since broadened my scope and I’ve reviewed more mysteries and thrillers, as well as a few YA and fantasy novels. I’ve also written a few posts on board games, another hobby of mine, and I will continue to write about them from time to time.

I’m convinced that what truly makes a blog is its visitors, particularly those who comment regularly. Thank you to all of you for the book recommendations and the interesting discussions. :D

After reading Magdalen’s post on Nora Robert’s new Bride Quartet, I was intrigued. Despite not being a huge fan of Nora Robert’s books in general, I’ve enjoyed a few of her romantic suspenses, especially Northern Lights and Angel’s Falls. It’s hard to find contemporary romances these days which don’t include some paranormal or suspense element. Therefore, The Bride Quartet sounded like the sort of mindless fluff I’m in the mood for at the moment.

When my copies of Vision in White and Bed of Roses arrived, I had to conclude that I’m shallow. I just love the covers for the US editions! They have French flap covers and deckle edges. They are fussy and elaborate, and remind me of formal wedding invitations. They fit the premise of the series perfectly, and made me not care about forking out extra for trade paperbacks.

The Bride Quartet centres around four friends who run a wedding business together. Mac is the photographer; Emma is the florist; Laurel is the cake maker; and Parker is the wedding planner extraordinaire. Mac and Emma’s books were released in 2009, and Laurel and Parker’s stories will be out this year.

I’m only a few chapters into Vision in White, so I’ll have to reserve my verdict for my review. So far, though, I’m really enjoying it. It’s delivering exactly what the beautiful cover promises: a sweet romance, and a nice story of lifelong friendship. I find the details about American weddings both fascinating and horrifying. An elaborate, choreographed wedding is my idea of hell.

We have yet another board game to rave about. We’ve only played Agricola a few times – and at the most basic level – but I’m already ranking it as my favourite game.

As the Latin title suggests, it’s a game about farming in the 17th Century. Each player starts out living in a basic wooden dwelling with a small supply of food. The aim of the game is to expand the farmhouse by adding more rooms, replacing wood with clay, and, later on, stone. Fields have to be planted; animals acquired and looked after. The winner is the player who has the wealthiest farm at the end of the game.

I’ve given an extremely basic explanation for what is quite a complex game. Agricola is not suited for casual gamers as the rules are complicated and take some time to learn. It’s far more strategy-based than many games on the market, and was the recipient of a special prize for “Complex Game” from the jury of the prestigious Spiel des Jahres awards in 2008. However, it’s worth the effort in my opinion as it’s a game which both requires you to think and which is a lot of fun to play.

Once I’ve played it a few more times, also at the regular level, I’ll write up a more in-depth analysis.

What are you reading at the moment? Have you read any of Nora Roberts’ Bride Quartet books? Has anyone played Agricola?

I loves the Bride Quartet books!

The last few trilogies/series by Nora I wasn’t blown away with, but this series has me eagerly anticipating each new release. The friendship theme runs so strong and deep, and the romance in each book – so far – delivers on all fronts for me.

I enjoy the friendship to lovers theme, and I’m happy that the next Quartet book, Savour The Moment, will have something along those lines, along with some unrequited love. :D

@Lou: I’m loving the description of the wedding business and their dealings with various Bridezillas. Highly amusing. Vows is almost a character in its own right.

Magdalen April 13, 2010 at 15:53

Well, you already know how much I loved the relationship(s) among the four principals — women enjoying other women is so much fun to read, particularly when it’s not 100% Sex And The City-ized.

But I also loved picturing the weddings she describes. I kept thinking, “I bet researching these books is/was a blast.” Like her or loathe her, Nora has a great gig going on!

Wow — if it’s been a year, then that’s just about the same amount of time I’ve been active in Romlandia. It’s been a learning experience, for sure. Happy anniversary!

Happy blogoversary!

I haven’t read the NR quartet yet, but it’s one of those series I keep meaning to get to. Someday, when I can just curl up and read all day long…now THAT would be the perfect job…

Plus I’ve reached the conclusion that the vast majority of the online kerfuffles are a load of crap, and I couldn’t be arsed involving myself in most of them.

Heh. Yeah. This.

I recall that Nora said something to the effect that if she & the publisher were going to go with trade pb, that they were going to make the books really stand-out re: quality. I know I’m not making this up. I’m guessing I heard her say it at RWA last year? Anywho, they are breathtakingly lovely books. Every time I see one in a book store, I stop to pet it.

Jessica April 13, 2010 at 18:03

Happy Blogversary Sarah! You make a great addition to the blogosphere, even if I totally disagree with you about the kerfuffles. ;)

Sarah April 13, 2010 at 18:43

@Magdalen: I was visiting AAR and blogs for years before I started blogging, but mostly as a lurker.

@Wendy: LOL! My copy of Visions of White is on the kitchen counter and I’ve stopped to pet it several times today.

@Lynn Spencer: Yes! I would love that job.

@Jessica: Thank you, Jessica! As for the kerfuffles: my current lack of interest is partly due to real life stuff. I have enough to stress about at the moment without adding online arguments to the list.

I for one love the direction you’ve taken your blog. You made it your own, it’s not a recycled version of so many other blogs out there. When I come here, I know what to expect, and I usually learn something. I say let the blog evolution take you where it will.

I go back & forth with the various blowups in blogland. Some days I’m riveted, others I couldn’t care less. It all depends. They sure do keep things interesting, that’s for sure. I know I worry too much about what people think, even when I know better. It’s the Libra in me taking over.

Happy anniversary :)

Has it a been a year already? Glad you’re gonna hang around for awhile :)

Kaetrin April 14, 2010 at 04:21

Congratulations on your blogoversary. I started visiting after I read some of your comments on other blogs and thought what you had to say was interesting and I visit regularly.

As for the Bride Quartet – colour me another squeeing fangirl of this series. I love the banter between the 4 girls best I think – it’s so well done, I feel like I’m sitting there to. It reminds me of the sort of conversations I’ve had with my friends (in tone, if not in content!) and the best parts of Sex & the City (which in my humble view was the relationship/s between the 4 girls). I hope you continue to enjoy the books. And, yes, I too think the covers are lovely.

Happy Blogiversary! I missed mine, too–for some reason I thought I started my blog in April, but then I was trying to find an old post and realized I started it in March (?). Hmmm.

Anyway, I’m surprised you’ve only had this blog for a year! I thought you’d been blogging for much longer than that. And I’m not a Nora Roberts fan, so I haven’t read the Bride Quartet series at all. I did buy one for my grandfather for Christmas, though.

Edie April 14, 2010 at 13:41

Happy blogiversary!

Buh the kerfuffles are better than TV how can you be ignoring them??
Though since I moved on to M&Ms instead of popcorn, my pants are getting tighter.. ^o^ (Is that emoticon a bat or a laugh?)

So curious to see how you go with the le noras..

Dhympna April 15, 2010 at 00:24

I love Agricola. I have been pretty impressed with what Z-man has been producing lately. A good beer/wine game is their “B Movies” card game series. Agricola is almost a step up from Zooloretto which won the Spiel des Jarhs in ’07 (if people are looking for something more family orientated and “entry level” strat game).

Janet W April 15, 2010 at 01:50

I really like the new direction of your blog as well! And I have become disenchanted with some aspects of romlandia as well … fortunately, there’s always a new wonderful blog or review to come along!

Renee April 15, 2010 at 05:13

Happy blogiversary! I really enjoy visiting, and love your posts. :-)

Christine April 16, 2010 at 21:42

Happy Blogoversary, Sarah!
It must be the latest ‘in’ thing to do, because I forgot my second anniversary a few months ago, too! I think your blog is great– I should really visit more regularly :D –and totally agree with you over the ridiculousness over most kerfluffles.

I have read the first two Bride Quartet stories, enjoyed them VERY much and can’t wait for Savor the Moment due out later this month. In fact, I should try to get on my library’s hold list before it even gets there. I wonder if they’d let me do that? Huh. Anyway, I, too, found the romances very sweet and the friendships and working relationships between the four women very realistic and just plain fun and heartwarming. Even when the friends mess up a little with each other. It’s true to heart, you know?

Hope you’re having a great day! :D

Sarah April 17, 2010 at 09:50

Thanks for all the Blogoversary well wishes! I can’t believe it’s been a year already.

I finished Vision in White and found it a solid read. It delivered the fluff and froth the cover promised, and it was exactly the sort of book I was in the mood for. I hope to post my review early next week.

@Dhympna: Agricola is my first experience of the more complex board games and I’m hooked. We also have Caylus, which won the Complex Game of the Year Award in 2006, but we haven’t played it yet. It’s supposed to be one of the better games for 2-player games. I’ll blog about it when we’ve played it a few times.
