Here are a few books I received for Christmas.
- Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML by Elizabeth & Eric Freeman
- Head First Web Design by Ethan Watrall & Jeff Siarto
These books are part of my New Year’s resolution to update my computer skills.
- The Falcons of Montabard by Elizabeth Chadwick
- The Champion by Elizabeth Chadwick
Elizabeth Chadwick is an author I’ve been hearing about for years. She writes historical fiction set in the Middle Ages.
- Christy by Catherine Marshall
I loved the TV series and I was sorry it got cancelled. My mother read this book as a teenager and loved it.
- The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns by Elizabeth Leiknes
So many people wrote rave reviews of this book that I had to give it a go.
- War for the Oaks by Emma Bull
It’s been on my Must Read list for years.
- Among the Mad by Jacqueline Winspear (5th Maisie Dobbs)
I’m a fan of Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs mysteries set in London after World War I.
Have you read any of these books? Which books did you find in your Christmas stocking?

I haven’t read these books, but they look great!
Santa brought me the entire PsyCop series by Jordan Castillo Price in print!! Smexy Claus delivered!
LOL I was just discussing with some other tweeters the other night, how I never get books for presents, and they were all in the same boat!
You are a lucky duck, my friends and fam always go you have too many books when I ask for them..
Have fun with every book Sarah
And if you can share HTML wisdom, I’m all for it. Sarah goes tutorial *grin* Santa already spoiled me with an e-reader earlier this month when the Dutch “Sinterklaas” came to our country.
Not familiar with any of the books except The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns, which I’ve heard nothing but good things about and am looking forward to reading. Good luck with your resolution to update your computer skills, and enjoy all of your new books! Have a great New Year!
I clearly *should* have gotten some books on CSS and HTML! LOL
But, unless you count the near-daily stream of used books that I ordered for myself, the only book I received this Christmas is Marian Keyes’ latest “The Brightest Star” from you, dear Monkey Bear! Many thanks again! (And — like I say — a proper thank you note will come soon.)
I used to have a wish list of knitting & quilting books, but not this year.
Oh, lucky you! I didn’t get any books for Christmas, but I did get a gift card, so I will be enjoying that later.
I’ll be curious to see what you think of Christy. I last read that book as a teenager, and absolutely loved it. I remember it being somewhat darker than the TV series, but a very good story.
I also rather liked War for the Oaks. I read it last year, and while some parts of it feel very 1980s, it’s still a pretty nifty story.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
No books for Christmas but that’s no big deal since I own over 800 books in print and goodness knows how many on my Sony Reader. But yes, I was one who really enjoyed The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns. Can’t wait to see how you like it!
Hope you enjoy my and Jeff’s book!
The major male character, Sabin Fitz Simon, is the illegitimate son of the Earl of Huntingdon, who is banished to Outremer in expiation of his many sins when his roving eye focuses upon a favorite mistress of the formidable old king Henry great one must be read.
@Mandi: I’ve never heard of that series! I’m looking forward to reading your reviews.
@Edie: I’m only a lucky duck because I write wish lists!
@Leontine: Put it this way: any knowledge I gain about HTML will be more than I already have.
@Alexia561: I’m really looking forward to reading The Sinful Life of Lucy Burns. I’ve seen it crop up on a few Best of 2009 lists.
@Magdalen: I hope you enjoy the Marian Keyes book.
@Lynn Spencer: My mother raved about Christy and I love the setting. War for the Oaks is one of those books that everyone – except me – seems to have read.
@Keishon: Good to know. I’ll definitely review it.
@Ethan Watrall: Thanks! I hope so, too.
@mirzahani: These will be my first Elizabeth Chadwick books.
Oh, you got Among the Mad! I’ve been wanting that for ages, am waiting very impatiently for the paperback. I love the way Jacqueline Winspear writes about post-WW1 London.
Very nice presents, all!
Among the Mad is already out in paperback. At least the US edition is. I’m a huge Maisie Dobbs fan and I’ve been waiting impatiently for this book!
I’ve read War for the Oaks. It was okay. There weren’t any oaks in it, though, so that was kind of confusing.
And I’ve read Christy–I loved the TV series, too, but the book is soooo much better! I think you’ll really like it.
I didn’t get any books for Christmas, believe it or not.
