Saturday Links: Crosswords & Book News

crossword

Magdalen sent me a link to her husband’s blog on crosswords. It’s called An Englishman Solves American Crosswords. What a great idea! I love basic crosswords but I’ve never been able to master the art of the cryptic variety. I must give them another try.

Victoria Dahl wrote one of my two favourite contemporary romances of 2009. I was delighted to learn via Twitter that she’s contracted to write a new contemporary trilogy which will be released Fall 2011. Apparently, it will be set around a microbrewery. Sounds intriguing!

Suzanne Munshower had an interesting piece on printed books vs. ebooks on the Guardian Book Blog this week. While I don’t agree with all her points, I just loved this paragraph:

The destiny of books? I think it’s that they exist to be read again and again, by you, me or someone else. We look at other people’s bookshelves and feel we know them a little bit better. Our own remind us where we’ve been and where we might choose to return.

Under the current conditions of sale, this is what we’re being forced to give up by choosing to read ebooks. It doesn’t have to be the case.

Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for the plug, Sarah — and if you want any help with cryptic crosswords, give us a holler. Ross used to edit The Listener, a weekly cryptic in the London Times, and generally considered to be the hardest crossword in the English language. But we can start you off with something really easy, if you like.

@Magdalen Easy sounds good! I think I haven’t grasped the basic logic behind them.

Magdalen, Please include me too — my doestheNYTimescrosswordpuzzleininkguybrother — enjoys cryptics so much and I’d like to at least try to experience what he does. My actuary husband does sudokus with numbers/words — I’ve done enough to understand why he enjoys them and that’s what I’m looking for.

Cryptics for a rank beginner (not rank smell LOL!)

Okay, let me see what I can do. (Ross has software that makes creating cryptic puzzles easier.) I’ll do something involving romances!

I can’t pretend to know the future of books but I’ve always agreed that a book will be easier (than an electronic device) to read in the bathtub. AND I have to agree with the bookshelf concept, too. How will we know what to think of people if we can’t see what books they have in house? :)

@Care I’ve made many a snap judgement based on a person’s bookshelves…or lack thereof!
