Random Musings About Birthdays, Books and Chocolate

Tomorrow is my birthday. Yes, yet another year has gone by, and I intend to party!

Last year was my 30th birthday and it conveniently coincided with my entering the 30th week of pregnancy. On bed rest. Great. Obviously, I was an alcohol-free zone. I was also a movement-free zone, which made any sort of fun outing an impossibility. Thankfully, my husband went to great efforts to make the day special, even from the dubious vantage point of the sofa. There was cake. My son ate most of it. He might have been sick, actually, but I’ve blocked that part. There were streamers and balloons. And, of course, there were candles. Most importantly, there were books. Lots, and lots of lovely books! Being on bed rest sucked but having a legitimate excuse to lie around and read was wonderful, even if I resembled a beached whale while doing so.

This year, I can actually move. This is a definite advantage as the former bump can also move and does so at great speed. I no longer look like a whale, beached or otherwise, although I might well if I eat as much Chocolate Orange Cake as I intend to. I’m thinking a bottle of champagne is called for, to make up for last year and all. I’m already in birthday mode after finding a nice surprise on my pillow: a bag of my favourite Champagne Drops from Läderach!

One aspect to this birthday which will not have changed from last year is an abundance of books. I asked for – and have received – a number of interesting titles. I also have book vouchers with which to buy even more.

Here’s a list of my loot so far:

  • The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss – Fantasy
  • Dragon Bones by Patricia Briggs – Fantasy
  • Dragon Blood by Patricia Briggs – Fantasy
  • The Price of Desire by Jo Goodman – Historical Romance
  • The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner – Young Adult
  • The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner – Young Adult
  • The Guards by Ken Bruen – Mystery
  • The Serpent’s Tale by Ariana Franklin – Medieval Mystery
  • Evil at Heart by Chelsea Cain – Thriller

No doubt more books will be added to my towering To Be Read pile over the next couple of weeks! Anyway, I will probably be offline tomorrow, so have a good one.

By the way, I do still read, but I haven’t been in the mood to write reviews lately. Rest assured they’re in the works.

Happy Birthday Sarah, I only know to well how the birthday book pile can grow and I say enjoy the birthday visits, the cake, the fact that you can move around and the bubblies :D

May your 31st year bring all good things; love, friendship, health and all the good reads you can muster!

Hugs,

Oh good heavens, I probably should not have clicked on the link to Läderach – LOL. My saliva glands are now working overtime.

Have a happy, happy birthday tomorrow Sarah!

Oh, good, you got the Guards by Ken Bruen. His style is different and I didn’t get hooked into the story till probably the 2nd or 3rd chapter but it is good so please stick with it. Can’t wait to see what you think of it Bruen. He’s truly hard boiled crime fiction.

And HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH. Early. Just in case I’m not on tomorrow. Yeah, right, I’ll be back on tomorrow. Sheesh.

Sounds like a trinity of birthday treats – chocolate, chocolate cake & champagne. And BOOKS, lots and lots of books. Happy Birthday!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes! I’ve definitely overindulged in the cake department. Haven’t started on the alcohol, but will get to that later!

Happy birthday, Sarah! (Sorry this is late — I was computer- and Internet-less for more than 24 hours while DH and I went to a major league baseball game with my ex-husband, Hub 1.0. Hub 1.0 has a really elderly computer & no wi-fi, so I didn’t even bother bringing my laptop. I just let the emails pile up. Very liberating!)

Hope it was a happy day! Here’s to many more . . . birthdays, and books!

Is it still Friday in Switzerland? happy birthday! Enjoy!

You post brought back some memories for me. I had my oldest at age 30. He is turning 10 this year. I know this is so cliche, but I don’t know how it happened that I have this tall handsome smart-alecky occasionally stinky boy in my house!
