There are five books I’m eagerly awaiting in September.
First up is Jo Goodman’s Never Love a Lawman. I need to be in a certain mood to read Goodman’s books as they are slow and atmospheric, but they are definitely worth the effort. And this one is a Western!
Blurb: Rachel Bailey may seem like just a beautiful newcomer to most of Reidsville, Colorado, but Sheriff Wyatt Cooper knows she’s much more. Through a twist of fate, Rachel is the inheritor of a very valuable commodity: control of the railway that’s keeps the isolated mining town connected to the world. That is, she will be, if she agrees to the surprising stipulation in her benefactor’s will – that she marry Wyatt. Rachel has no choice: refusing the marriage could put all of Reidsville in the hands of an outsider – and not just any outsider, but the cruel tyrant she has come here to escape. Yet living with Wyatt will be her greatest challenge. For he has a tempting way about him that makes Rachel forget theirs is a marriage in name only – until her frightening past shows up to remind them exactly how much they have at stake…
Surrender of a Siren is the second book in Tessa Dare’s trilogy of historical romances. I enjoyed the first one, Goddess of the Hunt, and I’m looking forward to reading Sophia Hathaway’s story.
Blurb: Desperate to escape a loveless marriage and society’s constraints, pampered heiress Sophia Hathaway jilts her groom, packs up her paints and sketchbook, and assumes a new identity, posing as a governess to secure passage on the Aphrodite. She wants a life of her own: unsheltered, unconventional, uninhibited. But it’s one thing to sketch all her wildest, most wanton fantasies, and quite another to face the dangerously handsome libertine who would steal both her virtue and her gold.
To any well-bred lady, Benedict “Gray” Grayson is trouble in snug-fitting boots. A conscienceless scoundrel who sails the seas for pleasure and profit, Gray lives for conquest—until Sophia’s perception and artistry stir his heart. Suddenly, he’ll brave sharks, fire, storm, and sea just to keep her at his side. She’s beautiful, refined, and ripe for seduction. Could this counterfeit governess be a rogue’s redemption? Or will the runaway heiress’s secrets destroy their only chance at love?
Laura Lee Guhrke is one of the most consistent authors of historical romance. With Seduction in Mind is the fourth title in her Girl-Bachelor series, featuring career women in Victorian London.
Blurb: Daisy Merrick has to earn her living, but she keeps getting the sack. When her rash tongue costs her yet another job, the feisty, outspoken girl-bachelor is undaunted, and she comes up with a plan that could give her a future beyond her wildest dreams. There’s only one problem. Her success depends on a man, the most infuriating, impossible, immovable man she’s ever met.
Sebastian Grant, Earl of Avermore, is England’s most famous author, but when writer’s block steals his creativity, Sebastian becomes more well-known for his notorious reputation than his work. When Daisy arrives on his doorstep, hired by his publisher to help him write his next book, Sebastian has no intention of cooperating. The provoking, fire-haired beauty stirs his senses beyond belief, and when collaboration forces them together at his country home, Sebastian knows he has only one way out. Seduction.
Hunting Ground is the second full-length novel in Patricia Briggs’s Alpha and Omega series.
Blurb: Mated to werewolf Charles Cornick, the son -and enforcer -of the leader of the North American werewolves, Anna Latham now knows how dangerous being a werewolf is, especially when a werewolf opposes Charles and his father is struck down. Charles’s reputation makes him the prime suspect, and the penalty for the crime is execution. Now Anna and Charles must combine their talents to hunt down the real killer -or Charles will take the fall.
I was excited to see that Philippa Gregory is starting a new series of historical novels set in the time of the Wars of the Roses. The first one - The White Queen – has just been released.
Blurb: Brother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize, the throne of England, in this dazzling account of the wars of the Plantagenets. They are the claimants and kings who ruled England before the Tudors, and now Philippa Gregory brings them to life through the dramatic and intimate stories of the secret players: the indomitable women, starting with Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen.
The White Queen tells the story of a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition who, catching the eye of the newly crowned boy king, marries him in secret and ascends to royalty. While Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become central figures in a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the missing princes in the Tower of London whose fate is still unknown. From her uniquely qualified perspective, Philippa Gregory explores this most famous unsolved mystery of English history, informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills.

I’m looking forward to Hunting Ground as well!! I still need to read Goddess of the Hunt!
Thanks for the link love.
The Jo Goodman is listed in the publisher’s Aussie website as scheduled for Nov 23. What?!?!
@Kat The Jo Goodman book is listed at The Book Depository as a 1 October release and Amazon Germany has it down for November. The official release date is definitely September. Actually, on my Amazon pre-order, it’s showing up as available in 1-3 weeks which would be correct. Sometimes non-US bookstores have old release dates still listed.
@Mandi I enjoyed Goddess of the Hunt!
I am still not sure about the Goodman Western because every single book I have read by her has not been finished or their is a case of incest in the heroine’s past.
Surrender the Siren was such a fun read! Very different from Goddess. Lusty is the key word
@katiebabs Jo Goodman is definitely not for everyone. Her writing style is more descriptive and uses less dialogue than many books out today. Also, they’re dark and gritty, which again isn’t to everyone’s taste.
I’m delighted to hear the second Tessa Dare book is good. The first one gave me high hopes.
You know how many authors over the years I had to watch leave the western to go to England? Too many to count. Seriously, your blog comment field isn’t long enough, and I don’t have all day
What’s notable for me about the Goodman? She’s LEAVING England and publishing a western. Damn, I can’t remember the last time an author did that. Wait a minute….has an author ever done that before?
@Wendy I know. All the authors who are no longer writing historical romance due to the move towards light and fluffy Regencies. I was only discussing Candice Proctor with Màili today on Twitter. I sincerely hope Goodman’s new book is a success. The advance review on Dear Author is glowing, so that bodes well.
Hi Sarah,
I have these four on my list:
JR Ward – Covet
Anna Windsor – Captive Spirit
Allyson James – Mortal Seductions
Anthology – Must Love Hellhounds
But I believe Anna Windsor’s first in her second trilogy is postponed :S I have Tessa Dare on wishlist too
I feel we’re almost leaving August and I have yet to read Dreamfever, Bad Moon Rising and I have just started in Haunting Beauty. Those are at the very top of my TRP. So my September books have to wait a little longer to be read *wink*
@Leontine I have Covet on my list for October. I find these release “months” very confusing and I’m not sure what the cut-off date is. Covet‘s official release date is 29 September. Whenever it comes out, I’m looking forward to it!
Allyson James…is that Jennifer Ashley?
I love Laura Lee Gurhke, but what in the world is the woman on the cover doing?!? Oy. Ten years ago that would have been on the cover of Playboy.
Well, ma’am, I see you’re excited about Gregorys latest. How about you take a look at this book, The Adventures of Alianore Audley by Brian Wainwright. It is sharp on the sarcasm, has a bit of romance, and an excellent historical that takes you all the way up to The War of the Roses. Also, Ms. Audley has a lot to say about those Woodvilles, too
I am still way behind with new releases, have to catch up, have not settled into everyday life yet after vacation and the same goes for my reading and reviewing. If only we had more time… But these books sounds great I will put them on my wishlist and be checking them out later. Especially The White Queen I find interesting. Thanks for the tips.
There’s one book I’m waiting for. One! And I’ve been waiting for many a September.
Mr. Martin, please go back to writing books. Yes?
@heidenkind I know! It’s a dreadful cover. I hope the book is good enough to make up for it.
@Keishon Thanks for the link! That looks interesting. I’m in the mood for a good historical.
@Marissa I wish I was one of those lucky people who can survive on just a couple of hours sleep. I’d have so much more time to get things done.
@Christian LOL! Looks like you’ll have to wait a little longer…
