Instant Gratification is the second book in Jill Shalvis’s Wilder Brothers trilogy. It’s a short contemporary romance set in the Californian Sierras.
Stone Wilder helps his brothers run Wilder Adventures, a company specialzing in a variety of guided outdoor adventures. Stone is the most levelheaded of the three and, as such, he’s generally left in charge of the more tedious administrative tasks. While he enjoys his job, Stone yearns for something more challenging. Flirting with the sexy new doctor provides a welcome distraction.
Dr. Emma Sinclair is a city girl who loves working in a busy New York hospital. Following her estranged father’s heart attack, Emma reluctantly agrees to take over his small clinic for the summer. Thus Emma finds herself abandoning her hectic life in NYC for the remote mountain town of Wishful, California. Emma is bored by her work in Wishful, which generally constitutes setting a few broken bones and stitching the odd minor wound. She’s frustrated by her father’s chaotic bookkeeping and longs for the summer to be over. She has nothing in common with the people in Wishful…with one notable exception. As Emma gets to know Stone better, she realizes her sojourn in Wishful might not be quite as boring as she’d imagined!
Instant Gratification is a quick and easy ready. It doesn’t break any new ground but it provided me with a couple of hours of escapist reading. While I quite liked Instant Attraction, the first book in the series, there were a few things which irked me. Instant Gratification is definitely the stronger of the two. The development of Emma’s relationship with her father is particularly well done. Stone was a decent hero, although I found it hard to differentiate between him and his brother, Cam, from Instant Attraction. Emma is a vast improvement on Katie, the heroine in IA. In comparison to the first book, the secondary characters in Instant Gratification remain in the background, which is preferable in a shorter format romance.
Jill Shalvis writes fun and sexy books. If you liked the first book in the Wilder Brothers series, you won’t be disappointed in this one. Grade: B-

Nice review! Haven’t read this author yet..too many books!!
@Mandi This is only the second book I’ve read by Jill Shalvis. ‘Instant Attraction’ was one of the books spotlighted by the Smart Bitches and Dear Author for their ‘Save the Contemporary, Save the World’ campaign.
I too heard about this author but have nothing on the shelves of her. I know, shocking but true *wink*
@Leontine Even if you don’t read her books, check out Jill Shavis’s blog. She cracks me up! It’s on my blog roll: http://jillshalvis.com/blog/
